How do you know if your sick?
Sometimes we are surprised when we hear of a person that was apparently who apparently had no health problems falls ill suddenly or unexpectedly. Could this illness have been prevented? How can we prevent illness in people that that have no symptoms. How can friends, family, other loved ones or practitioners predict an illness that has no signs or symptoms?
One of my old patients tells me a story that helps me understand what is happening here. As a young girl in central Europe, she would go out and search for a rare herbs cherished by her small village for their culinary and medicinary properties. Year after year she would look with no success. She knew that is was out there because occasionally an old-timer would come back with a hand full of these valuable herbs.
One day she sat in a meadow after a long afternoon of fruitless searching, she took her shoes off and leaned back. When she went to get up she felt a sensation on her toes and reached down. She picked up a sprig of herbs in her hand, and when she looked up she saw this plant spreading out around her in every direction. Spreading out like the ripples of water after a stone is thrown in a lake. Once she knew what to look for she could find it easily.
There is truth to the statement that we only see what we know how to see. It is impossible for you, or others to see imbalances in people that they do not know how to recognize them. It is an unreasonable expectation of yourself as a person, parent or partner. Because I have spent years being sick, and then healing and working with others to get better, now I can see things in people easily that were a mystery before.
I see health imbalances in my clients long before something becomes an illness. Not only do I have experience with the many clients that I have worked with, but everyone in my life is deeply connected to the medical field. When we sit around and talk in my house what we talk about it both conventional and natural medicine.
Without a doubt I can tell you that the most sensitive diagnostic instrument that I have worked with is the human brain. Thoughts, feelings and sensations can give you a clue to imbalances that will become disease long before any disease process starts or becomes obvious.
So the first thing you can do to diagnose your self is ask yourself how you feel. It is best to ask yourself how you feel compared to a symptom free version of yourself. If you are just slightly less or more miserable than yesterday that doesn’t mean much. How are you feeling compared to how you would feel if you felt great.
If you are not feeling great you are sick, and that part that doesn’t feel great is the symptom. Some people will find just a few subtle symptoms and others will find they are very far from where they want to be with their health.
Everything case starts out with slight symptoms. Everyone with an illness was once experiencing a state of discomfort that they would never have described as a disease. Remember these can be mental, emotional or physical symptoms. Then what happens is you get used to this state of discomfort so that they next time symptoms get worse it doesn’t seem that bad compared to the day before.
That is why you have to use an ideal you as the standard. What would you feel, what would you weight, how would your skin, eyes and hair look. Really you have to ask yourself if you look and feel healthy. If you don’t, then there is probably something that need to be treated. Of course for some people it is so obvious that they have symptoms that they don’t need to check. For other people they will need to think about how they feel and figure out if they are at their healthiest state.
If you try this yourself you will be surprised that you don’t automatically think of of being 18 years old. When I check this for myself I notice symptoms that are getting in the way of what I want to do. It may be a mental, emotional or physical symptom. It is a difference that our body seems to adjust for us in a healthy way. People don’t want to be young, they want wellness.
They say that that want to be able to have a good sleep and wake rested. They say that that want to be able to go our and play catch with their kids. They say that they want to be able to talk to their employees or their employer without anxiety. They want to not slip into depression for every bump in the road. If you look for and remove the underlying problems that are getting in the way of health, these goals are very possible.
